Vaping damages young people’s lungs as much as smoking, study suggests

According to a new study, vaping is as harmful as smoking to young people’s lungs. This has led to a renewed debate about the risks associated with e-cigarettes.
A study compared vapers to smokers during a rigorous exercise test. Both groups showed signs of being significantly less fit than those who had neither habit.
Dr Azmy Fassial, a professor at Manchester Metropolitan University and his colleagues asked 60 young people to measure their lung capacities by riding a stationary exercise bike. The study included 20 non-smokers and 20 vapers who had been using e-cigarettes for two years. Twenty of the participants had also smoked cigarettes for two years.
Vapers’ “peak exercise capacities” were similar to smokers’ (182 watts) but lower (226 watts) than non-smokers and vapers. This test is used to measure the amount of exercise that a person can do. The vapers and those who smoke were unable to inhale oxygen at the same rate as people who did not vape or smoke.
The study “adds to the growing evidence of long-term vaping being harmful and challenges the notion that vaping can be a healthier option to smoking”, Faisal said. He and his coauthors presented the study on Sunday in Vienna at the European Respiratory Society (ERS) Conference.
According to blood tests and ultrasound scans, both vapers and smoking groups showed signs of blood vessel dysfunction.
The smokers and vapers experienced more leg fatigue. They also had higher lactate levels in their blood. This is a sign that they are already fatigued before reaching their maximal level of activity.
Many smokers use vapes to quit smoking. The proportion of vaping 11-17-year-olds has increased much faster, going from just 1.3% in 2014 to 7.6% today.
Researchers have discovered that e-cigarette liquids and aerosols may contain toxic metals like lead or uranium, which can cause brain damage and organ damage. The ERS tobacco control committee chair and a public health reader at Imperial College London, Dr Filippos Filippidis, said, “Vapes have been sold in various flavors to appeal to youth. As a result, we see more young people taking up this habit without realizing the potential long-term health consequences.
Doctors and policymakers need to be aware of the dangers associated with vaping. We should do everything we can to help children and youth to stop vaping or avoid it.
The Government has pledged to use the tobacco and vapes legislation to clamp down on “irresponsible marketing” of vapes for children, as well as gradually outlawing cigarettes.
The article has been amended as of 9 September 2024. Earlier versions referred to the European Respiratory Society (ERS) as ESC.
